Netbusters & 5aside.org Charity Tournament in aid of The Brixton Soup Kitchen
We had big plans for our charity netball and football tournament, and it certainly didn’t disappoint! Having chosen The Brixton Soup Kitchen as our charity, we set about planning the event and thinking of all the possible ways we could raise plenty of pounds for this very worthwhile cause.
So first of all let us tell you a little bit about our chosen charity. The Brixton Soup Kitchen is a local initiative, founded and set up by Solomon Smith (pictured below with our tournament winners) with the goal of helping the homeless throughout Greater London. Not only do they serve food and give out clothing, but they also offer job and housing advice to help people to get back onto their feet. You can find out more about the charity here.
With a full house of 20 football teams and 10 netball teams on the day, it was guaranteed to be a great day of sport, fundraising and of course plenty of cake – and even the British weather was kind to us. We had plenty going on throughout the day, from a netball shooting showdown, football crossbar challenge, cake sale and a raffle, that’s not to mention 200 people playing netball and football! A special shout-out to the winner of the crossbar challenge – not only did he hit the bar once, but he managed it twice in a row – some people will never do that in a lifetime!
We would like to thank all the local businesses who supported our tournament and donated some fantastic prizes to our raffle. Restaurant vouchers, netball trainers, a £100 bar tab – we had it all up for grabs! Big thanks go to The Windmill, Picturehouse, Strada, Rush Hair, Brixton Brewery, Three Cheers Pub Co., Vodka Revs, Haché Burgers, Nando’s, Rococco Chocolates, WorkSpace, Floppy Toast and Sport Photo Gallery for their generosity.
In support of Brixton Soup Kitchen we also decided to set up a food bank trolley, encouraging all of our players to bring along an item of pre-packaged or tinned food. If we’d have known how generous everyone was going to be, we would have borrowed two trolleys from Tesco! We’d like to give a special thanks to everyone who donated – your contributions have made a big difference to the lives of many homeless people in our local area.
Another special mention goes to Diane from Bake You Smile who baked us so many to-die-for cakes! These weren’t just any cakes though, these were 5-a-side branded and decorated cupcakes! Check out Diane’s tasty treats in the gallery above.
All that’s left to do is congratulate our winning teams – Netball’s Deep (netball winners) and Danish Bacon (football winners) both overcame plenty of tough competition to be crowned our 2015 tournament champions! Both teams are pictured below with their fabulous new team kits, kindly donated by Logopress and Fivas. Thanks so much to all those who supported our charity tournament and helped us raise a huge total of £1017.23 for The Brixton Soup Kitchen! It was a great success and we hope you’ll all be putting the tournament in your diaries again for next year.
